I have been a big fan of Ms. Spencer from the first time I picked up a book of hers. The book was Family Blessings and I fear I wailed like a hound at the full moon it was so evocative. After that I read everything I could get my greedy hands on.Morning Glory was one of those early ones and holds a place in my heart. Yes, I howled some more, both with laughter and sympathy for Will and Elly. Two lonely people both with a traumatic past. I couldn't put it down and I love to revisit this story on occasion. This time it was because I added it to my Kindle Fire. But I will no doubt be back!
I was one of the millions of fans who were heartbroken when she retired and like many I have a tiny hope that she decides one day to write again. I will snag it the minute I see it if we fans ever get so lucky.
For some reason, her November Of the Heart is listed on Kindle but not currently available. It is also priced unusually low. I hope that Amazon makes it available again someday so I can add it to my collection. I have it in paperback, but my eyes have been spoiled by the ability to increase the font size on my Kindle.

Morning Glory (Audible Audio Edition) LaVyrle Spencer Deborah Raffin Phoenix Books Books Reviews
I read the paperback several years ago and recently listened to the audiobook. I liked it even better this time. The audiobook narrator Kate Forbes was wonderful.
What a lovely story. It felt different from most romance novels. It was written 23 years ago and reflects some of that thinking. It was very sweet. A few times I was teary-eyed - the kind of tears that come from good things happening to people who really need it because of their circumstances. I kept waiting for arguments or fights to separate the couple and was surprised when that did not happen. Instead things just kept getting better and better. The relationship and the individuals were growing and getting better through most of the book. I wasn't used to that. Sure there was a problem separating the couple near the end ("the formula"). I enjoyed how that resolved.
I loved the wedding vows page 146. She thinks she's not pretty. This guy truly, truly loves her (and her children) - soooo neat. If you're looking for hot passionate sex, you don't want this. Yes there is sex, but it's softer and secondary. The main attraction is love not lust.
STORY BRIEF
Eleanor was raised by religious fanatic grandparents, not allowed out of the house, never had friends, made fun of at school. She married, had children, and her husband died. She lives as a recluse. The locals call her crazy. She's currently pregnant and needs a husband so she puts an ad in the paper.
Will was an orphan, spent time in jail, is a drifter, got a job but was fired when they learned he'd been in jail. He's hungry. He sees Eleanor's ad and applies for the job.

I read this again for the 3rd or 4th time and I dont know if Ms Spencer glances anymore at reviews but Im so very sorry that she retired. In this world of authors constantly writing about "damaged or broken" individuals, these two characters were truly damaged but didnt really know it and moved on with life together in the most beautiful and simple and loving way. What a masterpiece this story is! I recommend it to all my friends that want to read a "good book"!
Holy carp, what an emotional journey! This author really knows how to make two broken and heart sick individuals burrow into the reader’s hearts and just set up blissful, HEA housekeeping there. I think I cried more reading this book than I have in a long time. The emotions are extremely crisp and vibrant, making the reader live and experience every slight and fearful moment as well as every breeze of romance and love.
This romance novel turns into something else entirely, in my humble opinion. The author starts out with two very damaged people whose pasts alone will make the reader’s heart cringe for them. Their coming together and overcoming of their pasts to move into the future would be a fantastic romantic plot by itself. Yet, the author really does something special when she incorporates WWII and the final hurdle at the end. All the elements together elevate this book to an actual piece of historical fiction and not just a romance novel.
I really enjoyed the WWII elements, since that’s my kick this year. A family man knowing he’s going to be called away from his young family, the heart searing letters between husband and wife, the intense respect the people back home have for their veterans, and the details we get of the intense battles in the Guadalcanal region kept me on the edge of my seat and my heart twinging for these two leads.
And our two leads…. Just wow. I can’t think of two more damaged people than these two. Their pasts are so bleak that the love they find in each other seems even more elevated due to them. I guess at times their pasts might have edged into melodramatic territory versus reality. But you know what? The reader is carried away on the emotional ride so much that at least I didn’t even notice! I loved these two from page one and was sucked into their story from the very start.
Beautiful romantic connection between the two leads, great historical details, and emotions intense enough to make you viscerally experience the story in your gut make this a romantic novel to remember. Even if the lead’s backgrounds might slide into melodrama at times, it in no way takes away from the story. The reader is swept away no matter what. I might have to check out these older romantic novels now, if this book is anything to judge by. What a beautiful story!!!
